MA.16 is based right at the heart of Merchants’ Academy with a truly exceptional team of experienced teaching and pastoral staff welcoming both home grown and external students from right across Bristol.
At MA.16, we strive to offer our students more than just an academic curriculum. We are passionate about building well rounded individuals who have the confidence to believe in themselves and aim high.
New courses, New facilities, New vision!
The new curriculum at MA.16 is designed to meet the needs of the community of students, offering a diverse range of traditional academic subjects married alongside a wide variety of vocational courses for students aged 16-18. From the academic courses of English Literature, Maths, Biology and Chemistry to the more vocational pathways including Lv3 Applied Sciences, Travel and Tourism and Sport.
MA.16 has forged links with many local business partnerships, enhancing the academy's provision and allowing MA.16 to offer a more contexualised curriculum. Current partnerships include Bristol Community Sport Programme which works alongside the Lv3 Sport programme and the football academy, as well as Boston Tea Party who work closely with the Catering students. The support of these external business providers allows MA.16 students a unique learning experience whilst developing links and opportunities for the future.
Interlinked with the academic studies on offer, MA.16 have a vast menu of extracurricular experiences and life skills sessions for all of the students; including Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, to cultural trips around the UK and abroad, as well as opportunities to learn about managing finance, accessing further or higher education or simply knowing how to independently cook a nutritious, balanced meal.
Exciting new facilities for 2019
From September 2019, MA.16 opens the doors to its new facilities aimed at giving students a bespoke environment dedicated to them. The facilities will offer students a fresh, modern, vibrant learning environment clearly focussed on student wellbeing.
The new common room offers an environment designed for relaxing and socialising with our family of students across both lower and upper sixth. The room boasts some exceptional urban artwork produced by the highly acclaimed Bristol street artist John D’oh. The common room leads out to a relaxing sixth form garden. Here students can work, read or relax listening to some music or chatting to friends. The garden leads up to our MA Sports Centre where our students have free access to the gym facilities whilst studying with us, continuing our commitment to wellbeing. Next to our student common room is the sixth form study room. Here students can use the computers, read or complete work independently, expanding their knowledge and continuing their learning.
Whilst we pride ourselves on our strong emphasis of student wellbeing, we also have very clear expectations around self- directed time and structured work periods encouraging our students to strive for academic excellence and self- determined goals.
Two years at MA.16. will transform your opportunities for the future, open doors that you could never have imagined and will help you achieve more than you ever thought possible.
